In the interest of transparency, we maintain a full Register of Governor Interests, including any business or pecuniary interests and positions of authority in other educational institutions.
We maintain a high standard of engagement, with records of governor attendance at FGB and committee meetings published annually.
The Governing Board at Mortimer Community College comprises dedicated individuals who bring a breadth of skills, knowledge, and perspectives to the school's strategic leadership. Our Board is composed of up to 15 governors appointed for their specific skills and professional expertise
Our board includes:
- 1 Head Teacher
- 1 Staff Governor
- 1 Local Authority Governor
- 8 Co-Opted Governors
- 2 Parent Governors (elected by the parent body to ensure a parental perspective).
(2 vacancies - election coming soon)
While our governors come from diverse professional backgrounds, all governors hold equal status.
We are currently led by our Chair of Governors, Mr Stephen Coldwell, and our Vice Chair, Andrew James Guy.
Committee Structure
While the Full Governing Board (FGB) meets formally four times a year, much of the detailed business takes place through our specialised committees. All governors sit on at least two of the following:
In addition to committee work, governors take on Lead Link Roles for critical areas such as Safeguarding, SEND, Pupil Premium, and safety. They also serve on panels to manage complaints, HR matters, or exclusions when required.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
At Mortimer, we deeply respect our diverse school community and aim for our Governing Board to reflect this.
We believe effective governance is rooted in a diversity of thought and background. Our board includes members who represent the variety of cultures and experiences within South Shields and the wider community.
We are committed to removing barriers to governance and fostering an inclusive environment where every voice contributes to enriching our students' lives.
